The Division of Social Sciences Computing Services has several guidelines and policies that are more specific to our services.
  1. Use
    1. The Anthropology Computing Center is intended for the use of graduate students and faculty of the Department of Anthropology
    2. Undergraduate students and graduate students in other departments will be given accounts to use the facility only with the sponsorship of a faculty member.
    3. Accounts can be requested by going to https://iota.uchicago.edu/, the system administrator. Each account includes 10GB of storage space on the server.
  2. Access
    1. The ACC Lab and conference room are open during regular hours (8am - 5pm weekdays).
    2. The computing center includes three different rooms: the Lab (H-M101) and the Conference room (H-M102).
      1. The Lab can be accessed only via the north door. The south door is permanently locked and alarmed.
      2. The Conference room can be accessed only via the south door. The north door is permanently locked and alarmed.
  3. Security
    1. The red phone in the computer room dials directly to the campus police. It cannot be used for any other type of call.
  4. Rules of Use
    1. No food or drink in any of the rooms.
    2. Do not install any software or hardware on any computer, this includes programs downloaded from the internet.
    3. Certain computers are dedicated to specific computing tasks as described on the specification sheets adjacent to each terminal. Users requiring a computer established for a designated application will have priority over other users.
    4. Users may store their data either on media provided by them (floppy, zip, or compact disks) or in their designated space on the server. If user files are stored locally on any given machine, they will be deleted indiscriminately. User space on the server is accessible via the PCs, Macs and via SFTP.
    5. If students need to print they should use the resources at USITE. The HP2500C and the HP Designjet 500 PS plotter are reserved for the use of faculty and staff.
    6. None of the computers or peripherals may be moved without permission from the systems administrator. All items in the center are secured using fiber optic cable and any tampering with these will set off the alarm and summon the police.
    7. Equipment may be checked out only by submitting a written request to the Department Computing Committee; books may be checked out for a period of 3 days through David Forero. Please be courteous to your fellow users and return the books promptly.
