Shell Access

This document describes the rudimentary steps in establishing a connection to the ACC server in order to run server hosted applications. It is assumed you have already have an account on this system ( username and password) if you do not go to the accounts howto.

Shell logins

A shell login to one of the ACC server allows you to run hosted applications. You must use Secure SHell (SSH) to connect to the ACC servers. SSH is a connection protocol that encrypts the communication to and from the server. The primary advantage of SSH is that it can support several different unsecured protocols (eg telnet, ftp). ACC will accept connections from SSH enabled telnet or ftp clients. Connecting via SSH telnet will allow you to have command-line access to the servers. You can manipulate files and execute program which reside on the server. Connecting via SSH ftp (SFTP) will allow you to moves onto or from he server.

SSH on a UNIX and UNIX-like machines
Most other UNIX and UNIX-like machines (such as harper.uchicago.edu) will already have an SSH client installed, you can find out by entering the command username@acc.spc.uchicago.edu from any prompt. If an error appears please contact the System Administrator David Forero or acc-help@listhost.uchicago.edu for more help. Note: Mac OS X and Linux are UNIX-like machines.
SSH on MacOS
If you are using an older version of MacOS (version 7.5 through version 9.3) you can either use a Java SSH client or download and install an SSH client. Download MacSSH and install it on your computer. After starting the application down the File menu and select Open Connection . In the dialog box type in the name of the server you want to connect to acc.spc.uchicago.edu.
SSH from Windows
Secure Shell for workstations is freely available to academic users. After downloading and installing this program start the program and select QuickConnect. Enter the server you want to connect to acc.spc.uchicago.edu. There is also a Java version of SSH.
SSH via Java (Installation Free)
If you do not have authorization to install applications on the machine you are currently using, you can try the Java client which does not require to be installed. The application does work with most Java enabled browsers, but there are no guarantees. Start JAVA SSH Client.
